Sophie's Under the Sea Cake
HAPPY 3rd BIRTHDAY SOPHIE!!
I'm so glad I had the chance to make at least part of Sophie's Under the Sea cake (see my post below for the reason why!). The birthday girl specifically requested a cake with whales, sharks, turtles, fishies and crabs! Rumor has it she loved it!
Vanilla cake with strawberry puree filling and vanilla buttercream frosting. Whale, sharks, turtles, fishies and crabs are all made out of homemade marshmallow fondant.
Disaster Strikes
In every bakers life there comes a time when nothing turns out right. Every cake has a deadline and the pressure mounts the closer it gets. Saturday started out great for me and little Sophie's 3rd Birthday Cake. The theme, Under the Sea, and the request was for whales and sharks and turtles and fishies and crabs. Easy enough. I can do that.
This is how the bottom chocolate layer turned out (keep in mind it's just dirty iced but it was unsalvageable in my mind, delicious, but ruined). The top layer of chocolate cake cracked into about 6 pieces when I tried to put it together. The strawberry puree filling escaped the dam of buttercream piped on the edge to hold it in (I blame this on Saturdays humidity and my lack of a subzero fridge).
The worse part- IT WAS DELICIOUS. Probably one of my best purees to date. The cake was so moist and delicious and with just the hint of buttercream and the strawberry filling... mmmmmm!
Thank goodness I had a wonderful customer who understood and although I was up at 6 am this morning to rebake the whole thing, she was happy with just the top layer.
Thank you Alanna for being so understanding and I'm glad Sophie loved her cake anyway!!

Word Search Birthday Cake
Yesterday was not only Mother's Day, but my Granny's 92nd Birthday! Oh ya!
We celebrated in style at my parent's house with a delicious prime rib dinner with the works. Rare prime rib, crispy roasted potatoes and light, fluffy yorkshire pudding all smothered in thick, rich gravy. Once again my folks outdid themselves with another wonderful meal. I wish I took pictures before we all devoured it!!
My contribution was a delicious carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and a theme the reminds me of my Granny. Winter nights spent in Florida and summer afternoons spent at the cottage, a word search or crossword puzzle book was never far from her fingertips. I've developed the obsession and now carry a crossword book in my purse! There are a couple other names thrown in the mix for fun. ;)

Brithday Cupcakes
Amidst all the holiday hustle and bustle two of the sweetest little girls are celebrating birthdays this week far away from home. My two big (as in older, not as in butterball *wink*) cousins are home from the States for the holidays (happens but once every three years!) and both Samantha and Kate are December babies. It was a nice break from the Christmas baking and hope the girls enjoy eating them as much as I enjoyed baking and decorating them. Happy Birthday Sam and Kate!
P.S. That's dark purple icing- looks like black in the pictures, or maybe it's just my laptop?!
